Michelle,

Thank you for your insightful comment. And you are right -- it does take 10 to 20 hours per week to be effective and for many small business owners, that's crucial time away from their core business.

Brilliant, DIanna! This is the first post I've come across that explains so clearly why small businesses need professional marketing. In all honesty, mom and pop shops have needed it for quite some time as the information channels have evolved. But as you've so aptly put it, the era that allowed DIY marketing to be effective is over.

In the days of phone book ads, local radio, static websites, and print ads, a few hours a month was all it took to handle small business marketing DIY-style. Today, it takes between 10-20 hours per week devoted to online communication to be effective. Add a blog into your mix or expand your relationships into the real world and it's a lot more. I don't know many successful business people who have that kind of time to spare. Because authenticity is so important, business owners do need to be deeply involved in their online marketing. But they'll significantly benefit from having a pro help them to structure and manage it on a daily basis, as well as guide them as the digital landscape continues to rapidly evolve.
